Mesa and Phoenix: Markets, Food Trucks and The Apache Trail

Apr09

We always have fun throwing out the phrase “we get around” but while staying in Mesa, Arizona we definitly lived up to the self proclaimed reputation.

mesa area

This was one of those places we drove so much we almost proclaimed ourselves offical car tourist too!  Ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but we were super happy to have our 40mpg car!  Mesa is just a short drive from the Superstition Mountains, downtown Phoenix and the famous Apache Trail.  We visited all of them and everything in between.

How to Avoid Being Alone on Holidays

Apr03

There is no reason to be without family and friends during holidays just because you’re a nomad.  The key is simple.

Be somewhere awesome!

Everyone wants a vacation and especially during a Holiday weekend.  And let’s face it, the typical sitting around and eating all day is fine but, we all crave a little adventure every once in a while.  If you tempt them, they will come.

We are in sunny California camping at Soledad Canyon and we managed to talk the grandparents into flying in from Arkansas, one sibling and the the boyfriend from Austin, mom from Dallas and The Aunts family from Bakersfield.  Meet the family.

Here is how we lured in Jason’s family for Easter weekend.

Petrified Forest: The Land of Dinosaurs

Mar12

We’ve heard polarizing opinions about the Petrified Forest National Park.  Some warning it’s a complete waste of time and fuel to get to, and others claiming it’s the most interesting landscapes you’ll see in the USA.

For those that said it was a waste of time, you obviously didn’t see what we did.

Top 2’s of 2012 – Cities, Adventures and Booze

Jan03

Another year has come, gone and left us with more video footage than we almost care to reflect on. We’re still editing adventures from 2012 (and even a few from 2011!) and while the year may be over, the adventures will still seem new.

It was our year to explore the Eastern coast of North America. We began in Texas and trekked all the way up through Canada crossing back into the states via Maine and coasted into New Mexico before ending the year in Arizona. After looking back at everything, everywhere and all of our 2012 experiences we came up with the top 2’s in cities, adventures and booze. Why the top 2’s you ask; because 1 is a lonely number (and we’re just too indecisive to narrow it down). So here is goes…

Top 2 Cites:

Charleston, South Carolina
Because it’s as close to Europe as you’re going to get and still be in the states (and lets face it, nothing beats good southern cooking).

St. Joseph Peninsula, Florida
Sometimes nothing beats basking in warm water and doing cart wheels on white beaches. Especially when it’s one of the top beaches in the world! (yes we said the world).  Read more

What Can Solar Power Do For an RV?

Nov20

One question we get often is “what all can be powered by solar panels on an RV?”  The question is simple, the answer…well, it’s a bit more complicated.

First, let’s look at the RV Solar Power set up we have on Windy:

I know that was quick and brief but hopefully it gives you an idea of what our set up looks like and how it works.  As you see we have two 65 watt solar panels for a grand total of 130 watts.  Our solar power setup isn’t perfect and can be improved providing more power.  That said we’re happy with our purchase as it does allow us to live off the cord longer (without having to run the generator) than the standard RVer.

Can an RV be Green?

Nov12

Updated: 02/15/2013

When I mention the words eco-friendly, green and RV in the same sentence, nearly every time it’s met with a roll of the eyes and a scoff.  I can’t say I blame them, before being an RV’er, I thought the same way.  “RV’s can’t be green…..right?”

RV’s are eco-friendly!  Of course I don’t have any hard research over a 10 year period to back this up, but here is what I do know:

On The Road Again, Again

Oct29

There is something about taking off for another year of adventure that just feels right.

Granted we have only been in Dallas for one month and 10 days of that was spent in Spain, it still feels like we are starting fresh again.  We spent time with our families, let go a little more of our old lives and belongings, spent countless hours in front of computers backing up and preparing for the future.  As we said our goodbyes and headed out of Dallas we almost immediately started feeling that strange adjustment in attitude with a new perspective in view.  It still amazes me how a trip never seems real until the moment it begins.  So here it is, our beginning to year 3 on the road again.

Now, if we could have only started a little earlier than 8pm…

Yes, we got a late start but it was a start none the less.  We drove through to Snyder, TX and called the Rip Griffin Travel Center home for the night amongst at least a dozen trucks.  There is nothing like the smell of exhaust and the sound of air brakes at a small town truck stop to start the trip off right.  We slept like babies.
