Idyllwild – A Small Town with Edge

Apr20

A mile high in the San Jacinto National Forest is the small town of Idyllwild, California. Famous for old movies and Jazz this town still holds its small town charm even though it’s a popular tourist destination.

There’s quirky art, not one single chain restaurant and (my personal favorite) the tiny retro theater!

How to Avoid Being Alone on Holidays

Apr03

There is no reason to be without family and friends during holidays just because you’re a nomad.  The key is simple.

Be somewhere awesome!

Everyone wants a vacation and especially during a Holiday weekend.  And let’s face it, the typical sitting around and eating all day is fine but, we all crave a little adventure every once in a while.  If you tempt them, they will come.

We are in sunny California camping at Soledad Canyon and we managed to talk the grandparents into flying in from Arkansas, one sibling and the the boyfriend from Austin, mom from Dallas and The Aunts family from Bakersfield.  Meet the family.

Here is how we lured in Jason’s family for Easter weekend.

Needles: Remnants of Rock Stars and Gold Mines

Jan19

While there’s lots of hiking in and around Lake Havasu City, Needle mountain loop trail is the only one we’ve been on that has remnants of rock stars and million dollar gold mines!

The Needles trail is about 30min outside of Havasu and just short of crossing the bridge to California.  However, getting to the actual trail head is a bit tricky and directions can be dicey.  It’s a good thing our friend Doug has a Jeep.

The Accidental Sea

Oct12

There once was a place where a half a million visitors and Hollywood’s best would dip their toes in the salty waters of the Salton Sea.  Real estate was sold from the sky and water skiing was all the rage.

All this on the desert shore of California’s largest lake 226 feet below sea level, now it looks like nuclear wasteland and soon to be back to what the Spanish once called the Valley of the Dead.

It’s desolate and what some would call a Monet. Its sparkling bright white beaches prettier from afar, with stacks of barnacles and bones giving the illusion of sand.   There are foamy shores and could be radioactive algae lapping the edges.

The place that once was and someday will be no more.

Anniversary on the Road!

Jun27

Saturday June 16,2012 – Anniversary on the Road!

Our first camper was a 1985 VW pop up Westfalia that I purchased in late 2005.  It was my Uncle Mikes fishing camper but with his retirement around the corner and the purchase of a new Class A motorhome it was time for it to go.  I loved that little camper and the moment I found out he was selling it, it was sold before he could even list it!  Jason at the time thought it was the worst idea and purchase I had ever made! I on the other hand was ecstatic and quickly planning my adventures in the little camper.  June 2006 we loaded up our families and headed for Seaside Florida.  From Dallas Texas Seaside is about a 15 hour drive so we camped along the way and sweated bucket loads (no ac in the little camper).
