With the launch of the 2012 Best of the Road competition, we have been flooded with questions about how we won. So here it goes…
We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we entered the 2011 Best of the Road competition. We didn’t know that we would have some of our greatest adventures yet, fall in love with 6 small towns and be more exhausted than we have ever felt in our whole lives! After all of that, we meet up in Los Angeles and bond like crazy with the other teams over our experiences.
Things to know before you enter: This contest is all about social media, photos, videos, blogs and your ability to pump it all out really fast! If you are not already somewhat familiar with all of these, this may not be the competition for you. It is important you are comfortable with each of these not just one or two.
Your job as a team will be to document your journey and each of your towns. For us, each town was so unique, welcoming and gracious that we felt a big sense of responsibility to capture them to the best of our ability. That was an added pressure we didn’t anticipate. We loved our towns so much we are in the process of making our way back to each one, they were truly the best small towns in America!
Stamina, excitement and a big sense of adventure required! So you think you can handle it? We logged thousands of miles, had some days where we started at 6am and ended at 2am (yes a 20hr day), and still had video/ photos to edit and blog posts to write. It’s all very exciting, full of adventure and great people! However, it’s no cake walk and definitely not a vacation. This is a chance to experience the road from a new perspective and take America along for the ride. It’s a rare opportunity to see towns, people and places like no other. It could be your greatest adventure yet or the most overwhelming, stressful and exhausting experience of your life.
How to enter: Create an entry video! A big part of this competition is video and personality. Get creative, think outside the box and show everyone why this is the perfect competition for you!
Read the Rules! Lots of people were disqualified. Videos were too long, used trademarked songs, etc…
It’s not all about the votes. Voting is just 10% of the judging. Just because you are in the top 5 for votes doesn’t mean you will win and become a competing team. Now, of course this is also a reflection of your social reach and how badly you want to be a part of the competition. Reach out to all of your friends, family, co-workers and anyone that you have an email address for.
Research! Check out the blog posts and videos from the 2011 Best of the Road. This will be your greatest insight as to what to expect once you are a part of the competition. You can see all of our videos from our Best of the Road here.

Good luck! Best of the Road was an amazing experience that we will never forget. If they would let us do it again, we would!
