What is Best of the Road?

The Road Rally is Rand McNally and USA TODAY’s search for the best small towns in America! Luckily, Gone with the Wynns was one of five super traveler teams selected to review the 6 town finalists in a 3 week trek across America.

Lots of questions right….

How did we get the trip of a lifetime (yes, it really was the trip of a lifetime)? We filled out and submitted for the contest on
An expert panel of judges (from rand mcnally and usa today) chose the five most qualified teams from over 70 submission to explore the finalist towns.

What is the trip about:
Each team had a cross country trip from New York to Los Angeles visiting the six towns in their assigned category along the way. We document our adventures by blogging, tweeting, video, and posting photos along the way. Our mission was to find the friendliest town, not an easy category but it was the best!

When we finally arrived in LA three weeks later, one of us won $10,000 and a SAAB 9-4X for submitting the best content on our cross-country adventure. Competition was stiff as everyone brought their A-Game! Ok, it was us, we were the winners!!! Not only did we walk away with some extra cash in our pockets and new SUV, we got to know some really amazing people. We made friends for life not only in the towns we visited but in our fellow traveling teams. Trekking the U.S. together, yet apart had us all experiencing the best and worst of what road tripping is all about. It may have been a competition but we all walked away with life long friends and that, you can’t put a price tag on!

The following week the winning town in each category was announced at the DMAI conference and awarded the Most Beautiful, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Most Fun, and Best for Food.

MOST BEAUTIFUL: Sandpoint, ID – documented by The McNavigators
MOST PATRIOTIC: Rapid City, SD – documented by Captain and Clark
FRIENDLIEST: Walla Walla, WA – documented by Gone with the Wynns (that’s us just incase you are not paying attention)
MOST FUN: Glenwood Springs, CO – documented by TraveleingJules and TraveleingJoan
BEST FOR FOOD: Lafayette, LA – documented by The Fun Finders

What happens to now that the contest is over?
It keeps going! It is a tool for travelers where you can not only learn about but post your own reviews, ratings, and photos of the best of the road. With lost of categories and attractions such as best beach, rad skate parks and the best frozen custard you won’t have to worry about where to go on your next road trip. So… go write a review about your favorite small town or favorite place so we know where to stop next!

Famous for my "how-not-to" videos, and typically the man behind the camera, sometimes I’m forced to be here in the “spotlight”. When you see my face you’re probably reading something more technical than adventurous, but either way I do my best to tell it like it is and infuse my opinions into the commentary…after all this is a blog and not MSN.
