Turning 28 Again, Nikki’s Bahia Birthday

It’s my Birthday!  Or at least it was when we filmed this video.  We’ve sailed into a new country, cleared customs and we’re free to explore. It’s our first date with Ecuador and because it’s my birthday, I’m on a mission to indulge in all the local delicacies.  And of course, we have an extra birthday hat for you too.

What more could a girl want on her birthday???  I had exploration, beauty, friends and love.  I can think of nothing more.

But, if I’m totally honest with you, our lifestyle has skewed my view on birthdays.  There’s still cause for celebration, but the lingering excitement and anticipation of the occasion is different.

You see, I remember counting down the days for my 8th birthday party. My grandmother was baking a cake, my friends were coming over and everyone was bringing presents. It felt like a BIG deal.

But the weird thing is, other than the anticipation of the day I can’t remember much about the actual occasion.  Except for the cake.  My grandmother made angel food cake with strawberries and whip cream. My friend Timmy Barnes said he thought it tasted like tires.  To which she responded, “well, how do you know what tires taste like?”

My grandmother was a whiz in the kitchen, but I do remember that cake being a little on the rubbery side.  I asked for German Chocolate the next year.  It was epic.

But back to my point. It was the idea of the occasion, the anticipation and something to look forward to that excited me the most.

Fast forward a few years, some roads less traveled and a handful of nonsensical lifestyle choices and my world is drastically different from my childhood.

Birthdays are all about celebrating life. Jason and I make a conscious effort to celebrate all the time.  We’re all about the Un-Birthdays.  So, we have lots of days filled with anticipation, something special to look forward to and be excited about.

“There are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get un-birthday presents, and only one for birthday presents, you know.”

-Lewis Carroll

Don’t get me wrong, Birthdays are a cause for celebration. But, so are all the days in-between.  Thank you for celebrating with me and a very happy (un)birthday to you too!

Sharing our lives and what we learn along the way is possible because of viewers like you. An extra big shout out to our Patreons! If you enjoyed this video, post or perhaps learned something new, check out our Say Thanks page. There are lots of ways you can help keep these videos flowing. Best part is, most won’t cost you a penny but they make a BIG difference to us. Thank You!

Hello there! I honestly don’t know what to say, so I am going to tell you a bunch of random facts instead. I'm a fish eating vegetarian who hates spiders and loves snakes. I almost never took vacations growing up. I wanted to be Pippi Longstocking (still do). I misspell about every other word I write and still struggle with grammar. I love splurging on a good high tea (which is really hard to find these days). And whatever you do, don’t tell me I can’t do something, because then I'll HAVE to do it!

Love your videos a lot. Thanks for sharing the adventure und taking us along.

I also have a Mavic Pro drone. A little tip: If you turn around (props down) the Mavic the moment you catch it, it will immediately shut down. Speeds up the landing process a little bit. And I find it much saver. Just in case you didn’t know. 🙂

Absolutely one of the BEST videos on U Tube. Keep those once a year celebrations coming. My two cats enjoy seeing yours as you sail into the sunset. Linda and I are still motor homing and enjoying Thousand Trails and of course Passport America. I’m going to the boat show this Friday in Newport Beach, but I’m not going to buy a boat. If I did I would get a sail boat like yours. Of course with lots of spare parts. Like a motor home you have to be handy, because sometimes there is no one around to help. I do have my Amature Radio W6YY to activate if cell phone doesn’t make contact with a cell tower or all else fails. What are you and Jason going to do after sailing the world? PS we met at the RV park along the water near San Francisco. Where you guys parked fell into the Pacific Ocean during a storm………….the row we were on behind you is not the front row so the price went up.

Happy Birthday, Nikki. Occasionally I go back to the program and watch “Going RV” as a reminder of when and how your adventures began with your first RV purchase. You’ve both come a long way and thank you for sharing your adventures with us.

    Hi guys,
Binge watching your YouTube videos with my wife Darci. We are monohull skippers from way back and now thinking twice about a catamaran like yours for adventures over in our final years on the water. Thanks for the inspiration.

Question: Why did you decide to sail past Columbia and go directly to Ecuador? Why not sail northwest along Panama to Boca Chica region and head directly to Galapagos from up there? Friends have told us of great sailing in Pacifoc from Panama City to Costa Rica and it puts hundreds more miles between you and Columbia.

Your close encounters with predators at night has Darci regularly reading piracy avoidance techniques on the internet. Like so many others, we worry for you guys. How about Galapagos to Boca Chica on the return? Leave a few hundred more miles width between you and Columbia.

Check out OSA peninsula… We have been to southern Costa Rica, Osa Penninsula — highly recommend and great port at tip of the bay (only real townnout there) near an incredible national park your viewers would highly like on the Osa. Pacific currents could then take you south to Panama again.

So inspired and wishing you guys safe travels. Keep on keepin’ on.

(PS. I have a bet with Darci that you are heading to Tahiti instead – it takes a vagabond to think like a vagabond — tell me you are not going to end up in Australia;)

Happy B-Day. I have a sense your getting the hang of entering Customs for different countries by now. The Panama Canel blog was very eye opening to the whole process getting from A to P. I honestly I still miss the RVing blogs you two drove us through.

What a fabulous birthday! I love getting to see you guys having so much fun. I had knee surgery in February-yeah! MY birthday present!-so the spaniels and I are beyond bored with rehab appointments, and my bike time. I am hoping that when I get healed & rehabbed, I can stand up on a pitching ship! Ecuador looks like it is doing pretty well in rebuilding. It took Los Angeles a long time to recover from our 1994 earthquake. I always enjoy your amazing adventures. Happy Birthday to a gal who has a real zest for life!

Happy Birthday to the cutest sailor in the world. She sails, drives motor homes, runs dingy’s, fly’s drones, what can’t she do? Was a little worried about your guys last week when I didn’t see a video posted, but looks like all is well. Any idea when you’re going to set sail across the Pacific? Thanks for sharing your adventures, love seeing them.

Great video , again! Happy very late birthday!! Or maybe happy un-birthday right.on schedule!! Lol that drone needs a handle o. The bottom you can grab instead in grabbing the body . Maybe a retractable stem that pops out when launched and just hangs down while flying, making it easy to grab when decending. Anywho! All the best keep on trucking ( sailing) hahhahaa ❤️❤️❤️
