Inside A Solar Powered Soda Factory

This week’s adventure is one part wild nature, one part Willy Wonka.  We’re on the home stretch of our road trip around the South Island of New Zealand.  We didn’t intentionally plan it this way but, we saved the best for last.  This is the most beautiful stretch of coastline!  Towering pancake rocks, snowcapped mountains off in the distance, and misty cloud-covered rain forests.  It’s a stunning drive that has officially made our top 10 list.

Plus, you finally get to meet the sailors who loaned us the lemon-covered truck we’ve been driving. They show us their 1947 wooden boat and we get put to work at their soda factory.  They really took the whole idea of a homemade lemonade stand to the next level.

And speaking of getting put to work, I think we’re going to have to start a special series and call it Clean Jobs? (we’re open to suggestions) Because like the American TV series Dirty Jobs, we like learning how things are made, and how people make a living.  But we’re global and are drawn to people who make the extra effort to make their trade more sustainable.

We hope you enjoy the mix of wild nature and local trade in this week’s video.

What’s With The MAP?

This is a free website and app from Roadtrippers. It’s been our go-to app for discovering weird roadside attractions (hello Cano’s Castle) and wild places to camp (Trona Pinnacles).  The free version is fantastic and packed with all the essential features.  But, we have the Plus account because it’s better for an extended trip (like this one).  Plus unlocks features like live traffic, notes for each stop, collaborating with friends, and offline maps (handy during the trip since the internet is intermittent).

Ups, downs, and all around, we share it all. If you like what you see, there are lots of ways you can show your support.

Hello there! I honestly don’t know what to say, so I am going to tell you a bunch of random facts instead. I'm a fish eating vegetarian who hates spiders and loves snakes. I almost never took vacations growing up. I wanted to be Pippi Longstocking (still do). I misspell about every other word I write and still struggle with grammar. I love splurging on a good high tea (which is really hard to find these days). And whatever you do, don’t tell me I can’t do something, because then I'll HAVE to do it!

You kids really do get everything out of life there is! Seeing the South Island of New Zealand is most likely one of those “Punch List” items not in our reality, but oh was it fun seeing it all through your postings! Luckily, my late parents Did travel there some years back and absolutely loved it. They rented a small caravan rv and toured both islands, coming home relating that it felt like America many years ago! So many sites to visit and enjoy. Watching you these past postings brought many memories back from what my folks told us, and for that I thank you again.

    That was a great video.
At 5:03 in this video I loved the big, unmovable rock being covered by water over and over and over.
The land at Pancake Rocks was beautiful in every direction you looked. I enjoyed all of that too.
I Googled Pete’s Naturals. It looked too tasty, not to! I was wondering where in California I could purchase all the flavors. I went to their website and found they do not ship out of New Zealand, which is unfortunate, but I completely understand.
That was amazing that Marlene and Peter lent you their Toyota or FJ for as long as they did. No problem. take it. “It can go anywhere.” 👍
In closing, that little red car was sooo cute. I would have stopped the car, looked at Nikki and said, “this is the cutest little red car in the world and sitting next to me is the loveliest woman in the world too.” This was only meant as a kind comment. Nothing more. When I saw the two of you driving in that little red car, I thought this is an opportunity not to be missed. Best always.

It looks like you had a lot of fun editing this episode. I’ll bet you had to leave a lot of good video on the cutting room floor.

Another inspiring, insightful episode. You guys have been at sea too long and forgot that in a car you wear seatbelts to protect yourselves, so the rest of the world can continue to enjoy your wonderful, creative minds. Please be safe and keep up the great work.

The Fiat Bambina was produced from 1957-1975, so newer ones may have a lap belt but the older ones may not have any kind of belt. I don’t think they went very far.
