Not What We Expected From Africa

Six Texans. Two vehicles that probably shouldn't have passed inspection. One Ugandan (Teddy) who's been waxing on about his home country for years.

Not exactly our typical Wynns intro—but then again, this wasn’t our typical trip.

We’ve been dreaming up this African adventure for over a year now, alongside our longtime Texas friends Hunter, Emily, and their two girls Parker, and Juliet.

The plan was simple: see Uganda. Not the brochure version with scheduled game drives and luxury lodges, but Teddy's Uganda. The real thing.

Plus we like simple plans, it leaves room for the unexpected. And let me tell you, we couldn't have prepared ourselves for it all anyway.

The vehicles were questionable. The city is chaos with swarms of boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) weaving in every direction. The roads were dirt, a deep shade of terracotta red that got into everything...your clothes, your camera, your soul. And the people, well, you know that feeling when a strangers excitement catches you off guard? That was an every day experience. It's one of those places you just have to immerse yourself in.

And then… there was the coffee.

We had no idea that we would start the journey off with such a question-every-assumption bang. "My friend Robert has a cabin at his coffee farm we can stay at. It's in the hills of the Lake Victoria Basin and has epic views."

Teddy knew what he was doing. He knew this first stop would shake us up—and it did.

This video is just the beginning of our Ugandan road trip, filled with rough roads, questionable suspension, coffee revelations, cultural growth, and the kind of welcome that makes you understand why some travelers never go home.

Thank you for being a part of the journey!

We’re utterly addicted to new experiences and obsessed with searching out Indiana Jones style adventures.

These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.

Each day we set off into the world with curiosity as our guide and compass. We talk to strangers and accept invitations without fear or reservations.  But people are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen.  It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection.  Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences.

Self-reliance is what lets us wander far from easy access, cell service, and well-worn paths. It's not about doing everything alone, it's about having the confidence to figure things out as we go. That's when remoteness stops feeling risky and starts feeling like freedom. A lesson we’ve learned time and again from the people and communities we’ve met along the way.
