TAKING OUR BOAT ON A ROAD TRIP

It’s haul-out day and we’ve only hauled our boat out of the water a handful of times.  And of course, my imagination is running wild with all the ways it could go wrong. (I may have developed a touch of post-traumatic boat syndrome after this past year.)

Plus, the tight quarters of a marina always make the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention.  Marsden Cove is a well-maintained marina with dock fenders everywhere which helps calm the don’t-add-to-the-repair-list nerves.

But, by the time we were at the haul-out ramp I was completely enthralled with the slipway trailer.  I was impressed, to say the least, and it’s a good thing.  Because aside from Curiosity’s trip from the factory 16 years ago, this is no doubt her longest road trip ever.

Hello there! I honestly don’t know what to say, so I am going to tell you a bunch of random facts instead. I'm a fish eating vegetarian who hates spiders and loves snakes. I almost never took vacations growing up. I wanted to be Pippi Longstocking (still do). I misspell about every other word I write and still struggle with grammar. I love splurging on a good high tea (which is really hard to find these days). And whatever you do, don’t tell me I can’t do something, because then I'll HAVE to do it!

    Nikki, Jason,

I love your videos. Discovered them a few days ago while researching sailing. My wife and I are near retirement and thinking of sailing for a few years. Your experience and insights have given me a lot to consider. One question I had watching this video. Do you live on the boat while in dry dock?

      Hey Paul,
That really depends on the boat yard and their rules. Some will allow it with conditions, some don’t allow it no matter what. The issues are that there usually aren’t facilities close to pump the black tank out, and boats don’t have gray water tanks so it goes right overboard. The Wynns probably could live aboard on the hard because they have composting toilets and if they shower and do laundry at the marina their gray water discharge would be very minimal.
      Hope that helps!

I was noticing your struggles dealing with the small trim pieces, and you may want to invest in an automotive trim remover kit and some dental pics. Lots of handy little tools with angles to get plastic tabs to release around corners all in a fairly small package. I use them pretty regularly for our vehicles and travel trailer.

Was watching last night and commented; with all you’ve been through, and I know this wan’t pure luck, to end up in such a professionally run, well equipped marina, was quite the fortunate turn of events. It’s great to know that you’ve been able to source some of your critical repairs with some reputable companies that are working with you to accomplish the jobs!

In addition to your travels and fun times, I so enjoy the repair portion. HELP! I’m intrigued with the tool Jason used to remove the screws/steps for window replacement. What IS this little gem called??

    Great video. Thank you.
So glad you are taking these significant steps to service the hard to reach jobs and places of Curiosity and get some help to do it according to this video.
    Awesome planning and action.
I am interested to know how long will Curiosity be dry docked too?
Not only are the two of you and Curiosity action packed and adventure filled but also you are educators as I continue to learn from you and your videos.
Watch out for vowel pronunciation there as you pointed out. It probably keeps your days interesting and a bit balmy too.
Don’t get stressed. Do one thing at a time. Do the next indicated step, Stay in the moment and have happy hours and happy days, one after another.

I have loved your channel for over a year now and watched everything. Am a Patreon minow who lives in Auckland. Am really hoping there will be an opportunity for your NZ crew to meet up some time. Not really comfortable crashing your life at Marsden Point. I so look forward to your news each week, especially now that you are in NZ.

    Love from Auckland

When I saw the hauler back down into the water, it reminded me of the few times I had to drive the boat up on the trailer so you could pull it out. It always too me several times. I thought Nikki was going to have to do the same thing. I Ha little worried for her!

How long will the boat be dry docked? Will you guys be doing most of the work or will you have some help?

Good luck. It looks there is a LOT to be done!

Next time it would be good to buy electronics that attach from the back. Just saying….

But hang in there. You’re doing great!

We had a nice 1/2 day trip on our boat today, as it’s been in the shop all summer – all the this-n-thats happened at the same time! AND I was thinking about YOU guys, hoping that the weather is getting better and that you’re making progress. Your updates keep me entertained and educated! Maybe Santa will bring you another hammer for Christmas!! ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♪♫

Not sure how I found your site but have enjoyed every episode. We almost did this 20 yrs ago but couldn’t agree on a boat. Hubby is a retired judge but has his boat Captains license (fighter pilot n Navy, master diver, etc). We just lived in FL & sailed our 34′ boat all over til it was time to move back to the Midwest. We r now n our late ’70s & ’80s so not going to happen. We will just follow you & enjoy. Fair winds ❤️❤️🇺🇸
