Turning 28 Again, Nikki’s Bahia Birthday

Turning 28 Again, Nikki’s Bahia Birthday

It’s my Birthday!  Or at least it was when we filmed this video.  We’ve sailed into a new country, cleared customs and we’re free to explore. It’s our first date with Ecuador and because it’s my birthday, I’m on a mission to indulge in all the local delicacies.  And of course, we have an extra birthday hat for you too.

What more could a girl want on her birthday???  I had exploration, beauty, friends and love.  I can think of nothing more.

But, if I’m totally honest with you, our lifestyle has skewed my view on birthdays.  There’s still cause for celebration, but the lingering excitement and anticipation of the occasion is different.

You see, I remember counting down the days for my 8th birthday party. My grandmother was baking a cake, my friends were coming over and everyone was bringing presents. It felt like a BIG deal.

But the weird thing is, other than the anticipation of the day I can’t remember much about the actual occasion.  Except for the cake.  My grandmother made angel food cake with strawberries and whip cream. My friend Timmy Barnes said he thought it tasted like tires.  To which she responded, “well, how do you know what tires taste like?”

My grandmother was a whiz in the kitchen, but I do remember that cake being a little on the rubbery side.  I asked for German Chocolate the next year.  It was epic.

But back to my point. It was the idea of the occasion, the anticipation and something to look forward to that excited me the most.

Fast forward a few years, some roads less traveled and a handful of nonsensical lifestyle choices and my world is drastically different from my childhood.

Birthdays are all about celebrating life. Jason and I make a conscious effort to celebrate all the time.  We’re all about the Un-Birthdays.  So, we have lots of days filled with anticipation, something special to look forward to and be excited about.

“There are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get un-birthday presents, and only one for birthday presents, you know.”

-Lewis Carroll

Don’t get me wrong, Birthdays are a cause for celebration. But, so are all the days in-between.  Thank you for celebrating with me and a very happy (un)birthday to you too!
