We Tried Taking Ourselves On Safari (no guides)

We thought, how hard could it be to take ourselves on an African safari? Turns out, when the trip starts with a dead battery, black smoke, and zero professional guidance, the answer is: pretty wild.

From lions and giraffes to hippos and crocs, and even one very elusive leopard, we explored what felt like every inch of Uganda’s biggest national park.  It turns out the driving is half the adventure… and the boat safari to the base of Murchison Falls is the other half. 🚙🐘🦁🐆🌊

I don't think a self-drive safari is for everyone but we loved the freedom and flexibility of being on our own (plus, it saved us a lot money). After talking to some of the other people we met in the park, it sounds like Uganda has the least amount of infrastructure compared to the more popular African countries for safari. (Kruger, Masai Mara, Botswana) BUT...it also sounded the most diverse and rugged. So, considering we survived and dare I say thrived in Uganda, it should be all smooth, self-drive safaris from here on out. Right?!
