It's not a definable aha moment, but somewhere along the way, what we came to see started fading into the background and something else took over.
We came to Antarctica for the ice and the wildlife. And we have had plenty of both. What we didn't expect was just how much our small crew would affect this trip. Then again, maybe we should've seen that coming. One small boat and ten humans for weeks on end has a way of turning strangers into something else entirely. And maybe that is part of why we ditched the boat entirely this week to sleep on ice. 🤷🏻‍♀️
There were moments where things escalated quickly. Leopard seals, questionable decisions, and possibly the worst place in Antarctica to park a dinghy.
At one point, it took four lines and two hours to get ourselves out of a situation that somehow also left us with fresh cabbage...which is not a sentence I ever imagined saying.
And somewhere in between all of this, the penguins, and the storms, I realized the best part of Antarctica wasn’t what I expected at all.
