600 Miles Across the Most Feared Ocean on Earth

Well friends, this is it. Our final chapter from Antarctica.

After a month of icebergs, penguins, whales, wild weather, and some of the most surreal landscapes we have ever laid eyes on… it was finally time to point Icebird north and begin the long sail back to South America.

But of course, leaving Antarctica isn’t exactly simple.

Between us and civilization lies the Drake Passage. A stretch of Southern Ocean with one of the most notorious reputations on Earth.

The Drake can be calm enough to make you question the legends… or rough enough to remind you exactly why sailors speak about it with so much respect. And the difference between those two experiences often comes down to one thing: timing.

Weather predictions have never been better, but they are just that. Predictions, not premonitions.

So, we picked our window and did what any good sailor does...pray the seas are in a good mood.

Now pour yourself a beverage and settle in, because this is a big one!
