Offbeat Adventures, Summer Eats and Border Crossings in Yuma
Have you ever wanted to go somewhere but didn’t really know why? Yuma, Arizona is one of those places for us. When we tell people we’re headed to, or just spent time in Yuma, we always get mixed responses. People either don’t know where it is, think it’s just for old people, assume there is nothing to do or they’re a snowbird that doesn’t want the rest of the world to know about their winter paradise.
For us, Yuma is a wonderland of crazy, historical and sometimes weird adventures. Plus there’s tons of fresh produce, patio dining in the middle of winter and a great place to cross the border for cheap medical! Still don’t think Yuma sounds interesting? Well obviously you never watched Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in the movie 3:10 to Yuma and you need to…but before you go clicking over to itunes or Netflix, here is a video roundup of six solid reasons to add Yuma to your winter road trip.
3. Seafood in the Desert
4. The Garden Café
5. Wild Ass Cocks and Camels
6. It’s next to the Center of the World
Yep, Yuma is one of those places where you never know what to expect so, you don’t know what to look forward to other than the unexpected. You just show up, have an open mind and see what happens.

If you haven’t been to Lutes Casino in old town Yuma, you just haven’t been to Yuma. It’s like less than a 5 minute drive from the old prison. Food and a feast for the eyes.

We spent about 3 weeks in Yuma last winter at a 50+ park. We loved it in Yuma, lots to see and do. We went to the State Pen and checked out quite a few of the eateries, great time. Pulled our 28 foot camper with a 2008 – 5.3 litre GMC mileage not great around 7 to 9 mpg (imperial gallons).
We are booked back for this winter for 8 weeks. We purchased a 2010 GMC Duramax Diesel for this trip, should be better mileage and easier to pull the camper. Diesel is cheaper than gas in Canada also. We are going to be in Yuma for about 4 weeks, then hoping to make a trip up the west coast from California to Washington and then home to Northern Saskatchewan.
I noticed by your map that you have not made it to Saskatchewan yet, we have the best lakes, camping, fishing, hunting and out door adventures, than any where else in the world and we are not crowded, you would not be disappointed.

We’ve stayed at the BLM behind VFW a few times, we’ve also stayed at a very small BLM right on the lake across from the KOA, and of course we stayed a 50+ Encore resort last time we were down because we were filming inside: https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/yuma-rv-resort
Great times for sure!

Just saw you both buying your rv on TLC. You are living the dream! How wonderful! I look forward to following you on your journey. I cam to America 13 years ago and traveled across the country a few times in not so much style lol. It is an incredible country and the best times were taking unexpected turns and meeting incredible people. I am sure it will be an experience you will never forget. Bon Voyage!

Hi! Was watching House Hunters RV this Memorial Day and thought I would stop by your travel blog. I applaud you both for LIVING life while you can enjoy it; too many people don’t and then have a ton of regrets. Great info on Yuma! All I knew about it was the movie. LOL! Thanks. Will be reading your others posts and subscribing to your blog.
